Solving Strategies for 9x9 Extreme Sudoku

Strategy 1: XYZ-Wing

XYZ-Wing extends the XY-Wing structure by giving the pivot cell three candidates (X, Y, Z) instead of two. One wing holds {X, Z}; the other holds {Y, Z}. Unlike XY-Wing — where the pivot never contains the shared candidate — the pivot itself also carries Z. Because Z must appear in exactly one of the three cells regardless of how the pivot resolves, Z can be eliminated from any cell that can see all three cells (the pivot and both wings) simultaneously.

Why it matters at Extreme difficulty: XYZ-Wing produces eliminations that XY-Wing cannot, targeting cells in the pivot's own visibility zone. On an Extreme puzzle where XY-Wing patterns are already exhausted, identifying three-candidate pivots and checking their wing-visibility relationships is the first chain-adjacent technique that consistently breaks open remaining candidate clusters.

Strategy 2: Naked and Hidden Quads

A naked quad is the four-cell extension of naked pairs and triples: four cells in the same unit collectively cover exactly four distinct candidate digits, allowing all four to be eliminated from every other cell in the shared unit. A hidden quad is the complementary form: four digits that appear as candidates in exactly four cells within a unit — forming a quad even though those cells carry additional candidates. On a 9×9 Extreme puzzle, quads are rare but decisive — a single naked quad in a row or column can eliminate four digits from up to five other cells simultaneously.

A short AIC begins at a cell with exactly two candidates. Assume one is true and trace the forced consequence through strong links (units where only two candidate cells remain for a digit). Then connect via a weak link. If both endpoints share visibility with a third cell that holds the relevant digit, that candidate is eliminated — even though no single pattern technique could produce the same result. At Extreme difficulty, chains of two to four links are usually sufficient before advancing to 9x9 Evil Sudoku.
